Quillon Law was recently profiled in The Lawyer as part of its Spotlight series, which showcases standout disputes firms handling some of the largest and most high-profile litigations in the UK and internationally.

Speaking with Deputy Litigation Editor Annabel Tinson, Partner Mark Hastings discussed the founding of Quillon Law and the principles driving the firm’s success.

“We had a strong sense that, unlike the last time when you had a lot of conflict-free firms forming who were getting referrals from large firms that were conflicted out, we thought the landscape was shifting and that specialist litigation-only firms were winning big instructions in their own right. In short, they were being seen as an appropriate place for the very largest commercial disputes.”

On the firm’s operational approach, Mark explained: “We’ve got a strong back-office team, and then certain responsibilities, like recruitment or financials, are divided up among our partners. We sell ourselves to clients – they’re buying us – they expect our attention and commitment to the cases.”

When asked about the firm’s growth and development in the litigation market, he added: “First and foremost, we want to be involved in big, commercial, complex cases… We already handle general commercial, complex civil fraud, financial markets litigation, investigations, and reputation and protection matters. In the future, if the right people become available in the arbitration space, the competition and group actions space, or an opportunity arises in another jurisdiction, we’d definitely take a look. We’re not closing our minds to anything.”

The article also highlighted some of the firm’s recent notable cases, including acting for Oleg Deripaska in his case against CT Solutions and Private Advisory Ltd, acting for a former chief executive and non-executive chair in a High Court claim against betting company Entain, and successfully defending Russian transport operator FESCO in the mammoth $13.8bn claim brought by Ziyavudin Magomedov.
